5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
Artifact: TEACHER TECHNOLOGY NEEDS ASSESSMENT
Reflection:
During the ITEC 7460 class, I developed the individual teacher technology needs assessment. Throughout this artifact, I was able to work independently with a first year teacher to complete an assessment on her stance with technology integration in the classroom. After we completed the technology assessment, I was able to plan out individual coaching sessions to be completed with this teacher.
Standard 5.1, Needs Assessment, is developed to allow candidates to conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. Through this artifact, I was able to give a pre-survey (needs assessment) on the skills that the teacher needed to work on when using these instructional programs. I was able to determine her subject area strengths and weaknesses through this assessment. After looking at the results, I was able to plan out how to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs through individual coaching sessions. Her assessment showed that she had a weakness in understanding how to integrate these technology programs into her classroom. I coached her on how to use these instructional programs in her classroom. We focused on Study Island, IXL, and ReadTheory.
When completing this artifact, I was able to learn a lot about the frustration of a new teacher who comes into a new position with very little training. In college, we are trained on how to teach, but when we get a job at a school we are unaware of all of the different things that the school does, and the programs that they use. If I had to change anything about this artifact, I would have included more of the first year teachers in these coaching sessions that I completed with this teacher. These happened at the beginning of the year, and I know that a lot of the teachers would have benefitted from learning more about our school from a teacher who has been there.
This was a great way to begin professional development for new teachers. It gave me a good idea of how the teacher was feeling, and what her areas of weakness are. She might have felt more comfortable expressing her needs on a needs assessment if she understood that she can get help from others on these topics. The impact of this artifact can be assessed by giving a post survey after this teacher has been coached on these topics. This will give a better understanding of the impact that was made on her technology usage in the classroom.
