2.1 Content Standards & Student Technology Standards
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. (PSC 2.1/ISTE 2a)
ARTIFACT: ENGAGED LEARNING PROJECT
Reflection:
Before I was given the PE position at North LaFayette, I was a third grade inclusion teacher in all subject areas. I was able to complete this project with a team of teachers who all taught fifth grade. The artifact used for this standard is the Engaged Learning Project completed in ITEC 7400 of the Instructional Technology Specialist's program at Kennesaw State University. This project centered on fifth grade students in Walker County, Georgia. Teachers had requested that the activities for these standards be more hands-on and community-based. Therefore, it was decided to take standards that were already taught and create a more technology-focused approach. I contributed to this project by designing this project, along with identifying the standards, objectives, and time frame in which this unit will be taught. LoTi level knowledge was used to design this project to also collaborate and involve individuals outside of the schools. We were able to involve the community more than we would with traditional teaching styles. This project was directly aligned to the ISTE standards, as well as the social studies and ELA content standards. Students will be able to choose a famous historian, research using a teacher-created Weebly, collaborate with a group while using research information to create a Glogster presentation, and then finally creating an informational video on Seesaw for their Glogster.
The following ISTE standards were implemented in this project:
ISTE Student Standards
1c Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
1d Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.
4a Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
4b Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.
6b Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
6c Students communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations.
6d Students publish or present content that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.
The following objectives were used to meet the technology standards in the Engaged Learning Project. These objectives are as follows:
Learner Objectives:
The learners will be able to research a particular historical figure from our American history standards provided to them by the teachers from a list of choices. The students will research and recreate these important historical artifacts for the museum.
Students will be able to:
- Research historical figure using webquest
- Record specific information on historical figures using the investigation document
- Collaborate with peers to produce a Glogster presentation
- Record the Glogster presentation with Jing
- Share presentation on SeeSaw
Standard 2.1, Content Standards & Student Technology Standards, is when the candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. I used content standards that are normally covered, but integrated technology into this project and included community members. This project can engage students much more than the traditional teaching method. They get to be creatively involved in a competitive project. The students in the county will enjoy this competition for years to come, and for some, it is truly an honor to have your video displayed in our local history museum. Student projects will be judged by the curators from the local museum. Involving more people from the community will be a better way to increase the participation and excitement for this project.
While completing this project, I was still learning about the importance of implementing the LoTi levels and the engaged learning indicators into my lesson plans. These two factors will greatly improve my lessons, and make the lessons more engaging for my students. If I needed to change something about this project then I would probably provide more opportunities for students to become more familiar with the programs that they would use throughout this project because there were a lot of training issues that needed to be covered that took away from instructional time.
Teachers in lower grade levels were very interested in the project that we were completing. They need to be trained in some of these programs so that they could use these and the students would be more prepared when they come into fifth grade to complete this project. This training can be assessed by the student knowledge of programs when they get to fifth grade, teacher feedback, as well as teacher surveys regarding program usage. Teachers also would like to be able to become more community-united, and this is one of the many projects that will bring the city together.
