3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: EVALUATING EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES PROJECT
Reflection:
In the ITEC 7445 class at Kennesaw State University, I was able to complete the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project. When completing this project, I was able to research more about a technology application called IStation. IStation is a comprehensive e-learning program for students to use at school and at home. IStation helped my third grade students with reading abilities. They were able to take a comprehensive evaluation, and then it placed them in lessons based on their individualized levels. I was able to have a trial run of this program, and I became very interested after we had an improvement in student scores. This program was a good fit for our school because it provided games for the students to play as well as lessons to complete. They enjoyed the learning and the fun aspects of this program.
Standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools and Resources, allows candidates to collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. Through this artifact, I was able to select and evaluate the IStation program. I was able to present this information and collaborate with other teachers and administrators to show an interest in purchasing this program for North LaFayette. Based on the technology devices that we have, I checked this resource for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the devices that we have.
I learned more about this program than I had previously known. I was able to see the weaknesses, as well as the strengths that I was already aware of from using it in our classroom. If I had to change anything about this project, I would make sure that I had as much information as I have and present this to other schools as well. No one else in the county uses this program, and others should be aware of the great impact that it had on our third grade students.
Throughout this project, there was a great participation of teachers wanting to learn more about it. The sad part is, that we had a free trial for an entire semester, and only one teacher (the one who I worked with) actually implemented it into her classroom. Other teachers wanted to implement the next school year after seeing the improvement of our students, and then our school decided not to purchase it. I completed this project to be able to show teachers more about this program in hopes that they would give their opinion about purchasing this program for our school. The impact of this assessment can be measured by the number of teachers and schools who show interest in the purchase of this program.
