4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: ELL LESSON
Reflection:
During the ITEC 7430 class, I developed the ELL lesson plan for North LaFayette Elementary. Throughout this lesson, I was able to work with a first grade student on many topics to help him prepare for his annual ACCESS test. I was able to work with him on an online program called ImagineLearning. When implementing this lesson, it could be used to help students prepare for these ESOL annual assessments.
Standard 4.3, Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness, is developed to allow candidates to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. When completing this assignment, I was able to use digital tools and resources, such as ImagineLearning application, to work with the student. Through the use of this program, I was able to enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness of the standards. The student was able to work toward reading and writing individual goals that were acknowledged by the ESOL annual assessment. This program is able to put things into a more personalized learning lesson for these students.
When completing this project, I was able to learn more about ELL students and how they respond to technology. I was able to learn more about the ACCESS test, and how this test is used to target areas that the student has strengths and weaknesses. If I had to change anything about this field experience, it would be that I would have had more time to work with this student using hands-on activities. I enjoyed the technology aspect, and so did he, but it made me wonder sometimes if he was only guessing answers instead of actually understanding the questions. I also would have liked to develop a more personal relationship with the student while working with him.
This lesson would be a great introduction to a professional learning opportunity for teachers. Teachers would feel more comfortable working with ELL students if they understood their strengths and weaknesses. It was amazing seeing the print out and actually understanding what the ACCESS test really tells us about each student. The impact of this lesson can be assessed by seeing how the student performs on the ACCESS test, or if he retained any of the information that I was able to teach him throughout my time with him.
