Artifact: Shared Vision
Reflection:
During the ITEC 7410 class, I developed a technology shared vision plan for North LaFayette Elementary in Walker County, Georgia. This vision pertains to students, administrators, teachers, parents, stakeholders, and community members. When implemented, the technology vision that I created will ensure that all students are equipped with the knowledge and devices necessary to develop life skills, improve communication, enhance critical thinking skills, and make instruction more engaging, effective, and efficient. At North LaFayette, we will integrate technology into every content area, continue to work towards including the ISTE standards into our curriculum goals, as well as continue to move toward an improved and updated media center. We developed this group as a team (two fifth grade teachers and myself) and then presented the information to the others on the technology team.
Standard 1.1, Shared Vision, is developed and implemented for the use of technology in teaching, learning, and leadership. By collaborating with a technology team, which consists of stakeholders (2), teachers (8), administration (2), parents (5), and students (8), we will be able to move forward with the steps necessary to put this vision into action. We were able to meet with parents, stakeholders, and teachers in the school council meeting that we hold monthly to get their feedback. We were able to ask student feedback in the student council meeting that is held monthly as well. Both of these meetings were helpful in creating the proposed vision plan. I was able to lead this collaboration in order to develop this vision. Throughout these planning sessions, current weaknesses and strengths of North LaFayette in the area of technology were discussed and shared through a survey and then noted on a Google doc. Implementation of this plan will help improve many different areas at our school, as well as create a more engaging, positive atmosphere for learning. We began implementation throughout the 2018-2019 school year. We currently have 1:1 Chromebooks in grades 3-5, and almost have 1:1 technology in the lower grades as well. We have purchased and used instructional technology programs to help increase student achievement. We have also implemented more technology into lesson plans. For example, teachers are using different tools for their students such as Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sites. The students are becoming more comfortable with using these types of tools in the classroom.
Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, we still need to implement many aspects of this vision. For example, we need to continue working on allowing students to have access to the technology devices that they need before and after school. Our stakeholders and community members can also help with this by allowing students to use multiple places that have WiFi access in our district. Our school will continue to try and implement the Technology Tuesday's and Thursday's at school. This would be two nights per week, or afternoons, in which parents can come with their child to the media center at North LaFayette to use technology devices for homework, research, etc.
This artifact was really an eye-opening assignment for me. I had previously never even thought about the different things that our school needs to work on in relation to technology. I have learned that vision plans take more than just one year to be effective. We will continue to learn and grow each year as we put this plan in place for our students. This vision plan could be based on a timeline if we had created one, so that is possibly an area that we need to work on in the future. It is also difficult for vision plans to be effective if everyone at your school is not willing to learn and implement the strategies as well. Therefore, if I had to do this assignment again, I would add more professional development opportunities for the next steps on how to implement the parts of this plan that have not been fully implemented. The impact on the staff and students can be assessed by the number of teachers correctly implementing this plan into their classroom.
Throughout this process, the ideas from the shared vision have led to many professional development opportunities through our PLC meetings that we have weekly. We have discussed how to use the instructional programs, and how to successfully integrate technology into our lessons. Our technology team of I never realized the collaboration that would need to take place in order for a school vision to be successful. Luckily, throughout working on this plan, I was able to collaborate with teachers, parents, community members, administration, and stakeholders to develop a thorough vision plan that would be beneficial for our school. I had to implement different things that I have learned throughout my courses at KSU, but I also have to continue to move forward to work on the things that we have not fully implemented yet. At the end of the year, teachers voiced that they were happy with the technology implementation that is taking place. They did decide that we needed different instructional programs than Study Island and IXL. This school year, we will be looking at how our school has been impacted by these new changes. We will be using a survey for our parents, stakeholders, students, and teachers to provide their feedback about the vision plan.
