3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. (PSC 3.4/ISTE 3d)
Artifact: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
Reflection: This Assistive Technology artifact was completed in the ITEC 7445 course of the Instructional Technology Specialist’s program at Kennesaw State. The purpose of this artifact was to use assistive technology tools to support a student with a disability. By completing this artifact, I was able to decide that the student needed a reading tracker. She was having trouble focusing on the reading, and not losing her spot. The tracker will help her be able to keep her spot and she will not have as many errors when reading.
3.4, Adaptive and Assistive Technology, allows candidates to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. When completing this plan for the student, I was able to choose the type of technology device that she would be using. I was also able to facilitate and model how to use these devices to the general and special education teachers who would be using it. This device allowed me to support this student and help her reach individual learning needs and goals.
I learned a lot through writing this plan. I was familiar with using IEP documents to explain why students needed assistive technology devices, but I had never made this type of plan before. I liked how the template allowed me to spread everything out and make it easier for teachers to understand. If I had to change anything about this assignment, then I would offer trainings to other teachers in the school, as well as throughout the county, to help more teachers understand how a tool like this can be successfully implemented.
Teachers did want to be trained using these tools. The only teachers that I was able to train were the ones who would be implementing this device, however, in the future I would like to offer trainings to both general education teachers and special education teachers on how to use this tool. This will be beneficial because a lot of teachers are not familiar with the many options that our county has access to that could help students work toward meeting their goals.
