Artifact: Technology Grant Proposal
Reflection:
This assignment was completed in the ITEC 7445 course of the Instructional Technology Education Specialist Program at Kennesaw State University. I was able to research and recommend a digital tool for the Physical Education classroom to use with students in grades K-5. The overview of this project was to be able to provide the PE classroom with a class set of Fitbits. This project was called “Hearts on Fire for Physical Education.” I created this proposal in hopes that we would be able to use these in PE to decide what exercise does to our heart rate, which exercises will raise and lower our heart rate, how many calories do we burn in a gym class, and how many steps that we take in the gym each day.
Standard 1.3, Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding, is developed for candidates to research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. By collaborating with my administrative team, we were able to research and recommend that we purchase twelve of these Fitbits for the gym last year. We had researched different brands, such as SmartTrack and Premium. We were able to purchase the Polar H10 devices. These were a better financial option for us, as well as had the features that we wanted. Our administration approved this purchase and we received the shipment at the end of the year. We hope to be implementing these into a weekly routine this school year within our policies and procedures. We only have twelve of these devices, so the students will be taking turns using them. We will go in alphabetical order, and log the information on an ipad. We will show the students the data, and see how different students’ heart rates are performing. We will compare this data based on the different activities that we are completing. Since these devices must be worn on the skin, we will clean these after each use using a disinfectant wipe.
I learned a lot through completing this grant. I had never considered writing a grant before because honestly, it sounded like a lot of work. It felt really good after completing this assignment because I had never really went to my administration requesting anything for the gym. I feel more confident in my ability to write a grant, as well as explain the importance of the grant itself. I wouldn’t change anything about the way that I chose to write this grant, but if I had to make something better then I would choose to request a higher number of these Fitbit devices so that everyone in the class could wear them at one time. It would be great to be able to compare what the same exercise does to everyone’s heart rate, instead of just what it does to a small group of students’ heart rates.
The work that went into this artifact will improve student understanding of heart rate, how exercises affect heart rate, and how many calories we burn in the gym each day. Students will be able to get a better understanding of these things when they use the Fitbit devices. Students can use the Fitbit to create informational projects to inform others of the benefits of this type of devices. This impact on students can be assessed by interviewing students about the importance of these Fitbit monitors, and the information that it is able to give to them. This school year, we will be looking to use these Fitbit devices enough to make sure that students understand what information can be taken from the supplies that this grant provided for our school.
